Designing a Halbach Rotor Magnetic Gear for a Marine Hydrokinetic Generator

This article presents the electromagnetic and mechanical design as well experimental testing results for a 9.5:1 gear ratio, series connected, coaxial magnetic (MG) use in marine hydrokinetic generator. A two- three-dimensional magnetostatic finite-element analysis (FEA) sizing was also conducted torque density comparison between using nested or MG typology is presented. To achieve high density, four-segment per pole-pair Halbach rotor assembly with unique slotted magnet arrangement used that enables magnets to be more easily assembled, even dimensional tolerance inaccuracies. deflection thermal FEA along validation test are The experimentally measured 188.4 N·m 236.5 N·m/L, respectively.
